Charlotte Street Located in the east end of Crotona Park in the South Bronx, Charlotte Street had been a working-class Jewish enclave in the years before World War II. By the 1970s, it was the victim of arson fires, rampant crime, a lack of city services and abandonment and neglect by landlords. In 1977, President Jimmy Carter visited the slum street in an attempt to bring attention the plight of the South Bronx on a national scale. In 1980 Ronald Reagan came to the street criticizing Carter for not fulfilling his promises. Years later through the work of community activist and local politicians, Charlotte was transformed into a well-manicured suburban community.
